Our History Hospice was founded in 1983 as an independent community palliative care charity by Dr. Nancy Grant, a radiation oncologist at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Today, Hospice Greater Saint John owns and operates both Bobby's Hospice, a 10-bed palliative care facility, and The Hospice Shoppe, an upscale second-hand boutique.

Our Accomplishments
- Founded in 1983.
- Trained and implemented the first group of community Hospice volunteers in 1984.
- Established family grief support services in 1987.
- Established Atlantic Canada’s first Therapeutic Humour/Care Clown Program in 2002.
- Established Hospice services in the community of Sussex in 2003.
- Established
a Hospice Palliative Care Clinic/Home Consultation Service in
partnership with the Saint John Regional Hospital in 2004.
- Received
national awards from The Canadian Donner Foundation for innovation in
senior’s healthcare programming and solid non-profit business
management practices in 2004, 2005 and 2009.
- Received the 2005 New Brunswick Day Merit Award to honour our contributions to the community.
- Named one of Canada’s Top 10 palliative care charities for impact giving by Charities Intelligence Canada in 2008 and 2009.
- Opened
Atlantic Canada’s first Residential Hospice in the former home of the
Sisters of Charity, Saint Joseph's Convent in November 2010.
Our Care Promise The
focus of Hospice care is on comfort, not cure – and on life, not
death. Our goal is to make each person’s last months of life as
comfortable as possible while also providing support to family members
and friends. Hospice is about dignity, respect, comfort, peace
and hope. It is about celebrating life and enhancing your quality
of living.

Our Residential Hospice is called Bobby’s Hospice to
honour Catherine (Bobby) Lawson, a 20-year Hospice volunteer who made a
significant donation to Hospice prior to her death in 2006, to enable the
organization to purchase a stand-alone Hospice House, and begin the journey of
establishing Atlantic Canada’s first Residential Hospice. |
Our
22,000 sq. foot community palliative care facility offers 24-hour care
delivered by certified and licensed professionals and trained
volunteers.
- 10 private home-like bedrooms and bathrooms for end-of-life palliative care
- 24-hour physician coverage and nursing care with expert pain and symptom management
- 4 family bedrooms, living rooms, TV room, dining room, kitchen, warm fireplaces, communication room, etc.
- A playroom for children, a chapel for spiritual reflection and outdoor garden to connect with nature.
- The care at our facility meets and exceeds the Canadian Standards for Residential Hospice care.

Our Funding Hospice
Greater Saint John is a registered healthcare charity – BN# 118963743
RR 0001. Our annual budget is $1.6M+. Government provides less
than 50% of the annual funding needed. The remainder must come
from the community. We all want to make a difference - to
help friends in need. And, we’d like to know that something we have
done has been important to the lives of others. Invest in the work of
Hospice Greater Saint John. You will help people when they need it the
most – many of whom may be your friends, neighbours and loved ones.
