the Vision
Hospice
Greater Saint John is a community non-profit charity
dedicated to comfort, care and hope in life’s final
journey. From our early beginnings in 1983,
volunteers and staff have provided compassionate support
to dying people and grieving families—in home, hospital
and nursing
homes.
Build
the Dream In
the fall of 2005, facing her own end-of-life issues,
Bobby Lawson, a 20-year Hospice volunteer made a
significant donation to enable Hospice to purchase a
home in the community and expand our programs and
services. In May 2006, Hospice moved out of the hospital
and into Atlantic Canada’s first free-standing Hospice
House.
Realize the
Dream It
was Bobby’s dream that Hospice would open a Residential
Hospice to give dying people and their families a place
to live out the remainder of their lives in peace,
comfort and dignity outside of the hospital. With
the purchase of the St. Joseph’s Convent from the
Sisters of Charity in July 2007, Hospice has the perfect
home away from home for people and families on this
difficult journey. Our costs to renovate Bobby’s
Hope House to meet building and fire codes and ready for
operations is $1.6 million dollars. This includes
installing an elevator, a sprinkler system, fire doors,
a garden, purchasing beds, home furnishings, equipment
and hiring nurses.
